HOW WE WORK
We strive to make the design process simple, affordable, transparent, and accessible. No project is too small. Whether you’re looking to create a small pollinator garden, beautify an unsightly view, establish a perennial border, cutting garden, or develop a multi-year landscape plan for a larger property, we're here to help. Our designs incorporate permaculture principles as much as possible. In residential settings this commonly takes the form of rainwater harvesting, use of permeable materials (e.g. gravel, and permeable pavers), attracting beneficial birds and insects, and composting/reusing yard waste as mulch. We take great care to specify plants and materials that are well suited for our central Virginia/mid-Atlantic region based on your preferences and specific site conditions.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Our design process consists of an initial 1 hour consultation where we walk the site and talk about what you want to accomplish with the design.. We’ll consider drainage/runoff issues, soil compaction, access, etc. as well as personal preferences such as how you will use the space, who will be using it, and environmental factors such as water availability, sun/aspect, and soil type. At this time we’ll also take measurements and photos that will inform the design. Following the initial consultation, we’ll present you with a design proposal. Once you sign, we’ll get to work preparing your design! Depending on the size and complexity of the area, the design could be a hand-drawn sketch or a more elaborate presentation prepared with computer-based design tools. Depending on the circumstances we may present you with more than one design concept; typically this is for larger, more extensive designs. In that case, we'll talk with you about each concept and get to an agreed concept before preparing a final design.
